Asa Butterfield is a young British actor who has established an impressive film and TV portfolio. He made his on-screen debut aged 8 in After Thomas but his breakout performance came two years later when he played the lead in the film adaptation of the John Baynes novel, Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
In the title role, Asa starred in the Martin Scorsese directed, critically acclaimed adventure drama film, Hugo. The film received eleven academy award nominations, including best picture, winning five, and was also nominated for eight Bafta’s and three Golden Globe Awards.
Asa can currently be seen in his starring role as Otis in the worldwide phenomenon, Sex Education, on Netflix. The coming of age comedy also starring Gillian Anderson returned in January 2020 to a viewership of over 40 million.
Asa returns to the big screen in Greed alongside an all-star cast including Steve Coogan and Isla Fisher. Set in Mykonos, Greece the premise is a satire on wealth, with the plot centered around a billionaire’s 60th birthday.
He is set to star in the 2020 animation, Watch The Skies, a family film that follows the intergalactic exploits of St’aar (Butterfield), an alien teenager who runs away from his galaxy on a small star ship and ends up stranded on Earth. He most recently finished filming the horror anthology series, 50 States of Frights. The plot will follow stories based on urban legends and folktales from around the U.S. Set for release on short form streaming platform Quibi, Asa will star alongside Rachel Brosnahan and Christina Ricci.
Other film credits include a starring role in Time Freak alongside Sophie Turner, and the lead in Then Came You alongside an exciting cast that included Maisie Williams and Nina Dobrev. An illustrious British boarding school becomes a bloody battleground when a mysterious sinkhole appears at a nearby fracking site unleashing unspeakable horror in Slaughterhouse Rulez. Asa played Willoughby Blake alongside an all-star cast that includes, Margot Robbie, Nick Frost and Simon Pegg. In 2017, he starred in the war drama, Journey's End, alongside Stephen Graham and Sam Claflin.
One of the many hobbies that Asa enjoys when he isn't working is competitive gaming. He competed in the 2017 Nintendo World Championships and is a brand ambassador for Panda Global, using his platform to bridge the gap between mainstream audiences and esports.
