Cynthia Cooper: Biography at a Glance

  • Cynthia is a WNBA champion, author, motivational speaker, and the current women’s basketball head coach for Texas Southern University.
  • Widely considered one of the best to ever play the game, Cynthia is an Olympics gold and bronze medalist and has been inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame, Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the first-ever WNBA player. 
  • Cynthia has 12 seasons of NCAA Division I coaching experience, including HBCU ties with both TSU and Prairie View A&M, as well as Power 5 experience at her alma mater, USC. Cynthia’s coaching record is 220-163, with five conference championships, eight post-season appearances, and three Coach of the Year honors.

Cynthia is a WNBA champion, author, motivational speaker, and the current women’s basketball head coach for Texas Southern University.

Cynthia joined the WNBA in 1996, the year the league was founded, where she led the Houston Comets to four consecutive championships in her first four seasons (1997-2000). A four-time WNBA All-Star, Cynthia won numerous awards, including League MVP (1997 and 1998) and four consecutive WNBA Finals MVPs, before retiring in 2000. Widely considered one of the best to ever play the game, Cynthia is an Olympics gold and bronze medalist and has been inducted into the USC Athletic Hall of Fame, Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the first-ever WNBA player. 

Following her playing career, Cynthia became the head coach of the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury in 2001 before transitioning to the collegiate level in 2006. Cynthia has 12 seasons of NCAA Division I coaching experience, including HBCU ties with both TSU and Prairie View A&M, as well as Power 5 experience at her alma mater, USC.
