James Marsden: Biography at a Glance

Biography

Having appeared in a wide range of films over the course of his career, James Marsden continues to carve out a distinctive place in Hollywood. 

Marsden can currently be seen in Freevee’s smash hit Jury Duty for which he’s earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series as well as a Television Critics’ Association Nomination for Individual Achievement in Comedy and a Hollywood Critics’ Association Nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Comedy Series.  Jury Duty earned Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Series, Writing and Casting and received TCA Nominations for Outstanding New Program and Outstanding Achievement in Reality. 

He also guest-starred on the revival of cult hit series, Party Down. The long-awaited third season features an impressive cast including Jennifer Garner, Adam Scott, Jane Lynch Tyrel Jackson Williams and Zoë Chao. 

Prior to that, Marsden starred alongside Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini in the hit dark comedy Netflix series, Dead To Me. The second season garnered an Emmy Nomination of Outstanding Comedy Series. For the third and final season, which premiered on November 17, 2022, Marsden received a Critics Choice Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and a Hollywood Critics Association Nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Streaming Comedy Series. 

Upcoming, Marsden will star opposite Michael Keaton, Marcia Gay Harden and Al Pacino in the noir thriller Knox Goes Away, which Keaton is directing. The film will follow “John Knox” (Keaton), a contract killer diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia who vows to spend his final days redeeming himself by saving the life of his adult son (Marsden).  Additionally, Marsden will star alongside Melissa McCarthy, Hugh Grant and Amy Schumer in Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. The Netflix ensemble follows the creation of the popular breakfast treat. 

Marsden returned for Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which released in April 2022. The sequel had a record-breaking box office debut of $71 million, becoming the highest opening for a video game adaptation of all-time and the number 1 movie worldwide during its opening. 

Additionally, Marsden reprised his role as ‘Prince Edward’ in the live-action musical movie Disenchanted, which released November of 2022. The long-awaited sequel directed by Adam Shankman features an all star cast including Amy Adams, Maya Rudolph and Idina Menzel and a “mind blowing new score” from Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz.
