Emmy-Nominated Writer & Director Known for When They See Us
Julian Breece is a writer-director whose work crosses film and TV, comedy and drama. He co-wrote the Emmy-nominated Netflix series When They See Us and penned a feature, which Barry Jenkins will direct, for Fox Searchlight about the life of acclaimed choreographer Alvin Ailey. He created the story and co-wrote the screenplay for RUSTIN, a film produced by the Obamas' Higher Ground for Netflix. On the development side, Breece is the executive producer and creator of a half-hour dramedy at Amazon (with Jenkins and Pastel producing), and the co-creator of an hour-long drama, The Vineyard, at Netflix. He was also a consulting producer on Amazon's Harlem. Breece completed the WGA Showrunner Training Program.
His one-hour drama series Mason Dixon sold to ABC with a production commitment and Lee Daniels attached to direct. He also developed Canceled, a half-hour comedy series, at WBTV with Berlanti Productions. Over the years, Breece has worked in many staffing rooms at various levels (from platforms ABC, FX, Hulu, and HBO, and with such esteemed creators as Steve McQueen, Beau Willimon, and Ed Zwick & Marshall Herskowitz). In 2008, Breece was honored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences as a top-10 Nicholl finalist for his first screenplay, Ball. Featured as one of IndieWIRE's young "Filmmakers to Watch," Breece's critically acclaimed short, The Young & Evil, was an Official Selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. He also created, wrote, and directed BET's award-winning web drama Buppies. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Southern California's Peter Stark Producing Program, Breece resides in Los Angeles.
